The figures in the series “People” are arranged according to the principle of chance. Mas gives them a maximum of freedom, placing the subjects in points of minimal mutual tension. The figures are black, they give out a feel of thick painterly matter.

Every figure becomes a sign on the vast white space. The paintings feel like a lab experiment, where someone looks in the microscope to see chaotically moving bacteria. The human “dredge” makes the space infinite beyond the borders of the canvas.

The viewer is not drawn away, however, from developing an interest in the individuality of the figures, to make his own plot for them in the absence of real psychological characteristics. A certain moment comes when looking at the paintings, when the viewer becomes co-author and looks for his own stories in the human flow.
